Jack Black is Nacho Libre
Some of the most humorous images to kick off 2006 have been from the upcoming film Nacho Libre. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black (King Kong), Nacho Libre is a story of
Ignacio (friends call him Nacho), a Mexican priest who moonlights as a lucha libre wrestler to raise money for his orphanage.
Nacho Libre is from the same silly people who brought us The School of Rock and the comedic classic Napoleon Dynamite. Though we are unsure how this film will match up to Napoleon Dynamite.
Nacho Libre Interview
The good people over at LatinoReview have recently caught up with Jared Hess and asked him some questions about his upcoming film Nacho Libre and the surprising popular Napoleon Dynamite.
With Napoleon Dynamite having a Mexican best friend and now this film set entirely in Oaxaca, Mexico, is it safe to say you have a passion for Latin culture? Where does that come from?
Jared Hess: Just a lot of my friends growing up. I was a Mormon missionary when I was nineteen in Venezuela. I was there for a year. That’s where I learned Spanish. My mother-in-law lives in Honduras half of the year. Just the culture altogether, I love it. I adore it.
Mexican wrestling still exists today yet you chose to set the film in the seventies. Why that particular decade?
Jared Hess: The Lucha Libre stuff, I’ve always been a big fan of the Santo movies. I think they’re unbelievable. He did like sixty different films which completely blow my mind. Most of those movies were done like in the sixties and seventies. Just the whole aesthetic and the whole way that the Lucha world looked and was at that time really appeals to me. I really like it. So that’s kind of the era that we’re referencing for this movie.
