The box office numbers have had more than an interesting mix of top contenders. By the end of Sunday most had figured that Glory Road was positioned to take the holiday weekend but Hoodwinked! came together for a huge holiday matinee push and stole the show.
Hoodwinked! Holiday Box Office
The first CG animated film for 2006 not by the usual Dreamworks, Disney or Pixar was a smashing hit. According to Variety, Hoodwinked! jumped ahead of the competition Monday thanks to holiday matinees, just barely stealing the No. 1 spot for the four-day holiday weekend with $16.6 million vs. $16.5 million for Disney's Glory Road, which had a slight lead as of Sunday.
Three films were in the running for top spot this holiday weekend-- Hoodwinked!, Glory Road and Last Holiday. By the end of the four-day weekend there was less than a $1 million dollar spread between the three films. Queen Latifah's Last Holiday pulled in $15.7 million.
Next in line was Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia ($12.2 million), which continues to suprise the box office with its renewed strength in ticket sales.
The only opening release that was unable to achieve top-five box office numbers was Tristan & Isolde. Starring James Franco and Sophia Myles, the film about a doomed love was only able to grab the interest of teenage girls; even though reviews are mostly positive for this film.
King Kong continues to recover its budget with another $9.2 million ($204.7 million total) over the holiday weekend.
