Hoodwinked! is one animated film that has rode on the phrase 'even though.' For instance:
Even though the film had a small budget and little marketing the animated film was still a top contender over the holiday weekend.
Even though the film had textures that were sub-par compared to older and upcoming CG animations, the film still brought in respectable ticket sales.
Even though the film is neither from Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks, it will still have a high return on investment (for The Weinstein Company).
Even though the box office estimates were incorrect and it was actually Glory Road who had the top gross receipts over the holiday weekend it is Hoodwinked! who already sees a green light for a sequel.
Hoodwinked! Sequel Updates
The news of a sequel broke when Rope of Silicon caught up with co-creator Cory Edwards and got him to answer a few questions about Hoodwinked!. Though I would have been asking if he has yet to see Havoc starring a bare Anne Hathaway, Rope of Silicon chose a cleaner route. Among the questions were a couple about the possibility of a sequel. Even before any official announcement, Cory Edwards claimed that the project was already moving.
Any thoughts on a sequel to Hoodwinked?
We're writing the sequel right now… The idea is Red is not the first person to wear the hood, it's like the secret of the Jedi, a secret monk-like society. It will be Red Riding Hood and the wolf together, that sounds like a lot of friction doesn't it? These two are icons. A lot of new villains and side characters too. We sent the Weinsteins and our investor the basic treatment and they loved it. It's a much bigger movie, more epic, across the ocean, in castles.
Has it been greenlit?
It pretty much has. We've been paid to write it, they are developing work for the animation. It's called Hoodwinked 2: Hood vs. Evil right now because they take on a lot of villains from old stories. The Weinsteins have said they want to co-finance and we want to do it.
Soon after the interview the good people over at Variety posted a release claiming that a Hoodwinked! sequel, currently titled Hood vs. Evil, got the official go.
The new installment in the franchise will find a teen Red training in a distant land with a mysterious, covert group called Sisters of the Hood. She is then called upon by Nicky Flippers -- head of the Happily Ever After Agency -- who teams her with the Wolf to investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel. The character of Granny, and the rest of the Hoodwinked gang, also return and are joined by new characters.
Hoodwinked! only had a production budget of $20 million. Harvey Weinstein stated that he planned to double the budget to allow for improved animation in the sequel.
