Though we had figured that the comic book craze had now shifted into novels and graphic novels when it came to film adaptations, there are always a few straggler superheroes still waiting to be picked up and brought to the bigscreen.

Iron Man Seeks Film

Director Nick Cassavetes, known for acting in films such as Blind Fury (seriously), Object of Desire, Sins of Desire and the always popular Class of 1999 II: The Substitute, may be working on the next big comic book adaptation.

What? You have never heard of any of these blockbuster hits? Well, maybe you have heard of some of the films he has directed: John Q (took a stab at HMO), The Notebook (made the ladies weep and hate their insensitive boyfriends), and Alpha Dog (currently a top ten).

According to the latest report over at MTV and an acknowledgement at IMDB, Nick Cassavetes is already in pre-production for an adaptation of Iron Man.

One of the most versatile directors in Hollywood, Nick Cassavetes has brought us the Sean Penn drama "She's So Lovely," the weeper "The Notebook" and the upcoming Justin Timberlake-starring "Alpha Dog." Now he's in pre-production on "Iron Man," a big-budget superhero flick about one of the most popular characters in the comic book world.

He said diehard fans' hopes that the character's costume will stay classic rather than go state-of-the-art is a "smart idea," adding that, "[It will be] more mechanical than high-tech — that's the way to go on that." Referring to his vision of Tony Stark's costume as a "flying tin can," Cassavetes said, "Marvel [Comics] is working things out right now." He concluded by saying no actor (including the once-attached Tom Cruise) has been signed to play Stark yet.

No more Tom Cruise? What, the actor get a little too crazy for ya in 2005?

Not exactly. As far as we know Tom Cruise was never attached to the project and shot down the rumors back in February of 2005.

Just so I don't get flak for not mentioning some of Cassavetes bigger films that he acted in, might as well add Face Off to his filmography (actor).

If Iron Man can begin production within the year the adaptation does have a chance to fill the comicbook void of 2008. According to IMDB, David Hayter (X-Men films) co-wrote the script for Iron Man.

Stay tuned for updates.
