After laughing hysterically through the entire running of The Birdcage in 1996 I had figured that a new genre of comedy was born. However, the 'gay' theme mellowed out for about half a decade after Birdcage and now looks ready to get rolling again.
For 2005 we had a couple 'gay' films that have found tons of critical acclaim plus possibilities for various awards. Brokeback Mountain is lined up to grab 'Best Picture' and Felicity Huffman could grab 'Actress in a Leading Role' of Transamerica at the Academy Awards. Both films touch heavily on the 'gay' subject.
Spotting the trend, Universal is ready to go forward with the upcoming comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. However, the film takes the lightest, or should I say straight, approach to the subject.
Adam Sandler, Kevin James for Chuck and Larry
According to a Variety, Adam Sandler and Kevin James are getting hitched for the Universal film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Both actors are about to conclue their deal with Universal to join the gay-marriage comedy.
Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin is ready to step back behind the camera with a script written by Alexander Payne and James Taylor. Alexander Payne has penned scripts such as Jurassic Park III, About Schmidt and Sideways; a film which he later went on to direct.
The story behind Chuck and Larry is similar to The Birdcage but in reverse. Two straight firefighters pose as a gay married couple in order to qualify for their department's domestic partner benefits.
Due to multiple script rewrites, the project at Universal experienced multiple delays with multiple lead actors coming in and out of the project. Now that Payne and Taylor have served up a finished script production is expected to get underway.
