Terrence Howard in Idlewild
With the success of films such as Remember the Titans, Friday Night Lights and now Glory Road, it looks like creating true-life stories and youth sports may be the next best thing to adapting comic books.
Lions Gate Films, spotting the trend, has decided to move forward with the upcoming film titled P.D.R. and is ready to pick up Terrence Howard to lead.
Terrance Howard for P.D.R.
According to a Variety, Terrence Howard is in final talks to play the lead role in Lions Gate Films' P.D.R., based on the true story of inner city Philadelphia swim coach Jim Ellis.
If Terrence Howard joins the cast of P.D.R. this will be his second casting move this week. The growing actor has also joined up with Robin Williams in the Warner Bros film August Rush.
The screenplay for P.D.R. was penned by Mike Gozzard and K. Michael Smith with Sunu Gonera set to direct. Gonera has previous directing experience with commercials and music videos.
Story revolves around Ellis' fight to build a swim team in one of Philly's toughest neighborhoods in the 1970s. Ultimately, Ellis leads the swimmers to the state championships. (P.D.R. stands for Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation).
As stated above, the film will follow the generic story of a down and out team gets a new coach, coach changes the way things work, coach takes team to state or national championships. The real question in these types of films is whether they lose the final game.
Terrence Howard can also be seen in the two upcoming films Idlewild and Awake.
