Count Olaf [Jim Carrey] working to create the perfect family.
As most should have been able to guess, Lemony
Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events was the hot ticket for the
week of Dec. 17-19th. However, Lemony Snicket's seems to have smoked
the competition by an amount that was pretty far beyond predicted. I'm not
necessarily saying that Jim Carrey's Lemony Snicket's made a lot,
it is just that the competition did not fair well this weekend... especially
the new releases.
Spanglish and Flight of the Phoenix Cannot Fight
Lemony
I figured Spanglish would only do so-so, Adam Sandler is still recovering
from his horrible Christmas animated flop, Eight Crazy Nights.
Flight of the Phoenix, on the other hand, had a horrid opening. With a little
over five million over opening weekend, Fox better starting reviewing their
marketing strategy.
I say this because I feel that the film suffered most because of strange
marketing. All the trailers and TV spots showed exactly the same thing from
Flight of the Phoenix-- almost everything. After watching the trailer for
the film, I felt I knew everything about the story from beginning to end.
Plane crashes, they plan to build new plane, storm hits and causes trouble,
sand people with weapons harass the stranded survivors, plane must take
off in the end for them to survive. I think I just mentioned the whole film,
with little to no surprises.
The next problem was television promotion. The only time I saw real money
being dumped into Flight of the Phoenix was during an episode of LOST.
Almost every commercial for the hour-long episode was for Flight of
the Phoenix; no joke.
Ocean's Twelve Holds On
Even though Ocean's Twelve has been bombarded by mixed reviews, it still
was able to keep the viewers coming for another week. Ocean's Twelve was
second place for this weekend with a gross of $18.2 million.

Lemony Snickets Takes the Weekend Gross
As stated above, Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events
was the number one film for this weekend with a gross of $30.2 million.
The reason for the success of this film can be found in two reasons: Jim
Carrey and an already-existent fan source for Lemony Snicket's.
Just to point out: The Polar Express is one hell of a holiday survivor,
Blade: Trinity loses about 60% by second weekend.
