I have had a teenage crush on Milla Jovovich ever since the acress donned the orange hair and sweet alien language in The Fifith Element. Sure, most would figure that Return to Blue Lagoon would have sold me on the actress-- the film features semi-nude scenes with Milla --but there was just something so cool about a hottie kicking ass in a body-defining outfit. Therefore, when I found out that Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) decided to make another gunkata toting film with Jovovich in mind, it was hard not to get a bit excited. Though Sony Screen Gems marketing of the film has been sub-par, Ultraviolet may be ready to strike theatres with a vengeance.
Ultraviolet Talks
The good people over at BlackFilm have recently caught up with Milla Jovovich and got the actress to discuss Ultraviolet and what it takes to jump back into the role of ass-kicking hottie.
What were some of the ultra-unique things that the director did to help you bring out that ultra-violentness?
Milla Jovovich: Well, we had an ultra-amazing stunt coordinator named Mike Smith, who was really, really had incredible vision. He really wanted to give this feeling of an Eastern-type martial arts movie, which in western action films you really just don’t have that kind of fluid floral type of wooshu. Usually, it’s very street fighting. It’s very like hard punches and it’s all about the violence. This is much more about the look, the movement; it’s so much about what she’s doing and not just about the punches. So, it’s taking it to another level, which I’d never done before and I was really excited because I was scared because I kinda have two left feet sometimes and in this movie I had to so much crazy stuff especially the sword tricks and the wooshu; it’s very balletic. Like I said up there (in the podium) you have to be very graceful so I’m a little nervous about that. I can throw a punch but man, when it comes to gracefulness I definitely kinda bottom of the list for that; so I had to work a lot. I didn’t get everything right that why I ended up working a year ahead of time.
Ultraviolet is the second stylized film from director Kurt Wimmer that uses the fighting style gunkata. The story is set in the late 21st century, where a subculture of humans have emerged who have been modified genetically by a vampire-like disease (Hemophagia), giving them enhanced speed, incredible stamina and acute intelligence, and as they are set apart from "normal" and "healthy" humans, the world is pushed to the brink of worldwide civil war (a war between humans and hemophages) aimed at the destruction of the "diseased" population.
