Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
Arriving to theatres under a veil of mixed reviews, Blue Sky's Ice Age 2: The Meltdown has gone far beyond expectations. With a predicted $70.5 million in its opening weekend, Ice Age 2 is officially the first blockbuster movie of the year.
Ice Age 2: The Meltdown Takes BO
We would be lying if we said we weren't worried about the box office performance of Blue Sky's sequel after negative reviews began to circulate the net. Fortunately for 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky, it seems that moviegoers were craving family over horror this weekend, allowing Ice Age 2: The Meltdown to destroy the opening competition.
Bringing in a whopping $70.5 million (predicted), Ice Age 2 has almost doubled the original's opening with $46.3 million and is now the second largest non-summer, non-holiday release behind Passion of the Christ. Even though the film shared an opening weekend with Slither and Basic Instinct 2, Ice Age 2 was able to pull in nearly half of all ticket sales.
Thanks to the success of Ice Age 2, Hollywood is also rejoicing with box office numbers 37% higher than last year for the same weekend.
Besides being the largest opening for 2006, Ice Age 2 also experienced the second highest animated film opening behind Dreamworks' Shrek 2.
Since family was the way to go, Sharon Stone's nude figure in Basic Instinct 2 was only enough to bring in a limp $3.2 million.
One film that we have been following religiously is V for Vendetta. Still the most original film this year-- and our favorite --V for Vendetta brought in an estimated $6.5 million in its third weekend. We figured a strong word of mouth would have slowed its decent to about 30%; instead of 47.6%.
