Meet the Fockers remain king of the cinema... for now.
The box office reports are in for the New Year weekend. With no real competition out there, Meet the Fockers has stolen the show again. However, the real surprise comes from the records that were broken this weekend. To my dismay, Meet the Fockers broke a record previously left by Lord of the Rings: Return of the King... I don't believe!!

New Years Weekend Box Office Report

Meet the Fockers reigned king over the holiday weekend with ticket sales at 42.8 million. This is a lot of money for a simple comedy and should spur on a Meet the Kids.. or something or other. Anywho, here is the latest and greatest of the box office report for New Years Weekend:

Meet the Fockers $ 42.8 M $ 163.4 M
Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events $ 14.7 M $ 94.8 M
The Aviator $ 11.2 M $ 31.1 M
Fat Albert $ 10.7 M $ 33.9 M
Ocean's Twelve $ 9.2 M $ 106.9 M
National Treasure $ 7 M $ 154.8 M
Spanglish $ 6.3 M $ 31 M
The Polar Express $ 5.7 M $ 155.2 M
The Phantom of the Opera $ 4.8 M $ 16.3 M
Darkness $ 4.5 M $ 16.5 M

Like I said before, I can't believe how much Meet the Fockers raked in. I guess people only felt like comedy for the holidays. Meet the Fockers did so well, it beat out two old records. The first record is 'highest ticket sales on New Years Day.' The previous record was set by LOTR: Return of the King, which sold $12.8 M in tickets [compared to Fockers astonishing 18M]. The other record, 'highest ticket sales on New Years Eve,' initially belonged to Cast Away with $8.5M. Meet the Fockers also easily beat this with $12M.

My biggest surprise was that a lot of people are going to see the film Fat Albert. That film looks horrid, but it still continues to do OK for a dumb comedy.
