The Husband
As the studios continue to gobble up novels for adaptation it was only a matter of time before they went full circle and returned to best-selling author Dean Koontz. Could it be Fear Nothing, Seize the Night, maybe The Face?
Though each of those books was a good read, Focus Features wants something a bit more current.
Focus Adapts The Husband
According to Variety, Focus Features and Random House are teaming to bring an adaptation of Dean Koontz's upcoming novel The Husband.
Focus is one of many studios following the new trend of acquiring the rights to novels before they have a chance to hit bookshelves.
The Husband follows an ordinary man whose love for his wife is put to a harrowing series of tests over a 60-hour period, beginning when his peaceful workday is shattered by a phone call from a stranger holding his wife hostage.
With the rate of divorce nowadays some men might see this as an easy out, but for 'the husband' the only solution is to get his wife back; a move that most likely makes a better novel and film.
The Husband will hit bookshelves on May 30th.
Dean Koontz, whose books have sold 300 million copies worldwide, admitted to Daily Variety that he has not been all that happy with adaptations of his stories in the past and hopes this to change with Focus Features.
"I've felt that the books were reduced to the lowest common denominator and an action line that may not be like mine. But I was impressed by James Schamus and (Random House Films prexy) Peter Gethers' attitude. I feel very confident in turning this project over to them. Because the people at Focus understand both story and subtext, they make narratively engaging, intelligent movies."
A production date has not yet been scheduled for The Husband.
Stay tuned for updates.
