Dragon Tiger Gate
Back in 2005 it looked like the newly-established Weinstein Co. was going to acquire as many films as they could. Having found success in multiple genres and mediums, it does seem awkward that they have slowed up in 2006. Or have they?
Kicking back into gear, The Weinstein Co. are ready to show off a little bit of the Asian persuasion in their new pet Dragon.
Weinstein Acquires Dragon Tiger Gate
According to Variety, The Weinstein Co. has acquired distribution rights to martial arts action-thriller Dragon Tiger Gate in all English-speaking territories.
The film was directed by Wilson Yip and is an adaptation of the Hong Kong comicbook titled The Gate of Dragon and Tiger.
Donnie Yen, Nicholas Tse, Shawn Yue, Dong Jie and Li Xiao-ran star in the pic, which follows three young Chinese martial arts masters who emerge from the back streets of Hong Kong to help the powerless fight injustice.
Donnie Yen (the one who needs a haircut) also worked as the fight choreographer.
The film has a July 28th release in Hong Kong and is being distributed by Mandarin Films. The entire budget for Dragon Tiger Gate is said to be near $10 million.
Dragon Tiger Gate marks the second Asian buy for The Weinstein's in 2006. Last month the picture house bought world rights to Ong Bak 2, the sequel to Ong Bak.
