Queen Latifah
After playing the Matron Mama, a taxi driver, an aunt, and a character with a terminal issue, Queen Latifah continues to expand her roles by going on welfare.
Queen Latifah to Star in Welfare Queen
According to Variety, Queen Latifah will star in Welfare Queen -- a fact-based story of a woman who scammed the welfare system out of a fortune.
I do know the coincidence of having a queen play a queen, but Queen Latifah should fit the role of a woman who figured out a loophole in the system perfectly.
Focus Features genre division, Rogue Pictures, will handle the distribution of Welfare Queen.
Abdul Williams will write the script based off the life of Dorothy Woods, a woman, who like many others out there, figured out that welfare was not only a way to go but could also provide a stable income. I'm still on the waiting list.
Welfare Queen is one of many films that Queen Latifah plans to create under her banner, Flavor Unit, while standing beside Focus Features. Focus production president John Lyons and Rogue head Andrew Rona made the deal with Queen Latifah to create a group of modestly-budgeted films.
"This is the first major deal we've signed with a studio, and we did it because we felt confident we could go from 'Welfare Queen' to 'Horror in the Hamptons,' which is a script by Alex Mirkin about a bunch of 16-year-olds chopping each other up," Latifah said. "We get our hands on a lot of material we can do well, and our dream is to work up to producing three movies a year. The deal isn't based on me being in every film."
The Flavor Unit banner has hung over films such as Bringing Down the House and Beauty Shop.
