Kate Winslet has been on my watch-list ever since her role in the underrated Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (co-starring Jim Carrey). The actress has a very rounded mixture of films under her belt including Titanic, Enigma, Finding Neverland, Iris, and the upcoming film All the King's Men.

However, what Winslet has yet to do is jump across mediums.

Winslet for Gnomeo and Juliet

According to Variety, Kate Winslet is attached to topline the CG-animated feature Gnomeo and Juliet for Miramax Films.

Being pushed by performer Elton John, Gnomeo and Juliet is a twist on Shakespeare's classic that's set in the world of tacky garden gnomes. People familiar with the project said it has a "Monty Python" sensibility and presumably the move to a specialty label will afford it an edgier, hipper tone.

What move you ask?

Gnomeo and Juliet was originally stationed over at Disney with a hopeful 2008 release date; that's what Elton was pushing for. Things were looking good until Disney re-teamed with Pixar, which quickly caused the picture house to pull the plug on the project entirely.

Daniel Battsek (Buena Vista veteran) quickly recovered Gnomeo and Juliet by shooting the project over to John's own Rocket Pictures and Miramax Films.

With Miramax now at the helm, the proposed $100M+ budget by Disney is bound to diminish significantly.

The script for Gnomeo and Juliet was originally written by Rob Sprackling and John Smith but has now been polished over by scribes Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley.

Kate Winslet is the first of many expected stars to be picked up to voice the film.

Stay tuned for updates.
