Hanks to Adapt Mamma Mia!
According to Variety, the hit musical Mamma Mia! has peaked the interests of Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman who are now seeking to turn the play into a feature film.
Playtone closed a deal with show producer Judy Craymer, who also owns the production company Littlestar, along with Abba songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The negotiations are set to have Universal finance and distribute the adapted film.
The filmmakers are hoping to get the film out to theatres by late 2007. However, don't rush or Universal may experience a box office dud to the likes of Rent. The show's book writer, Catherine Johnson, will pen the screenplay and keep the film faithful to the musical's original story.
Raised on a Greek island by a formerly rebellious mom who never disclosed the identity of her father, a bride-to-be locates three men who might be her father and invites them to her wedding. The resulting conflict triggers 22 Abba hits like "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All."
This is not the first tiem Judy Craymer has received a film offer for Mamma Mia!. The producer claims to had rebuffed multiple film offers over the years but liked the Playtone pitch and what Hanks, Goetzman and Wilson had done to turn Nia Vardalos' one-woman stage show into My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Craymer will be as closely involved in the film as she is in the 11 productions of the show currently playing worldwide.
