Star Wars: A New Hope A New Hope to return in 3D.
Though the box office slump was last year, director James Cameron has left whatever water he was currently floating in to push the upcoming technology known as D-Cinema. Just like many pioneer directors before him (including George Lucas), Cameron is hoping that cinemas will add a specific type of digital projectors to their theatres. Not only will this upgrade boost the quality of the picture but the box office returns as well; or so says Cameron.

D-Cinema and Star Wars in 3D

According to THR, James Cameron issued a call to arm theaters with digital cinema and digital 3-D in response to declining cinema receipts and rampant movie piracy. Cameron has been working on the 3D medium over the past couple years and now figures that the technology would make the difference on driving moviegoers out of their home theatres and into local cinemas. If not, the technology will at least help Cameron to move forward with the release of his planned 3D projects.

"We're in a fight for survival here," Cameron told the overflow crowd in the Las Vegas Convention Center. "Maybe we just need to fight back harder, come out blazing, not wither away and die. D-cinema can do it, for a number of reasons, but because d-cinema is an enabling technology for 3-D. Digital 3-D is a revolutionary form of showmanship that is within our grasp. It can get people off their butts and away from their portable devices and get people back in the theaters where they belong."

To help give digital 3-D a push, James Cameron is hoping to rerelease Titanic in the new format. However, he is not the only director pushing the technology and has the support of directors such as Peter Jackson -- who is looking to rerelease Lord of the Rings and King Kong -- and George Lucas -- who has been working on Star Wars 3D for some time.

Now, over the past few months we have continued to ask the question on what ever happened to Star Wars 3D; we have received tons of updates on the upcoming television series but not the films. Well, it looks like THR has confirmed the release of the films and they are so much farther along than we had originally predicted.

When can we expect to see both Star Wars trilogies in stunning 3D? How about next year! According to the report, Lucas is hoping to begin releasing Star Wars 3D in time for the saga's 30th Anniversary.

Somebody get me some glasses!

Stay tuned for updates.
