It has always been said that curiosity killed the cat. In the case of Universal Pictures United 93 -- the first feature film to take a detailed look at the events of 9/11 -- curiosity may reign the box office.

However, United 93 had its first test at the Tribeca Film Festival this Tuesday and, as expected, the film left audiences reaching for their kleenex; or the shirt of the person sitting next to them.

United 93 Kicks Tribeca Off with Emotion

According to Variety, United 93 performed as expected at the Tribeca Film Festival. Filling the seats with moviegoers and family members of the victims, the film was able to draw in the fear, compassion, sorrow and angst from the audience. According to the report, the screen went dark to the loud sounds of a sobbing audience; especially in the back where many of the nearly 100 family members of 9/11 victims were seated.

As the audience filed out of the theatre after the showing of United 93 the only description was that of funeral silence.

With United 93 due out in theatres this Friday, the Tribeca Film Festival only confirmed what Universal had predicted -- the public reaction to this film is going to be enormous. Taking a documentary approach, director Paul Greengrass gives a step by step depiction of what happened on the doomed Flight 93.

Though Greengrass was at risk of receiving flak for creating a film of this magnitude so soon, he has already received the approval, acknowledement and thanks from the victims' families.

"I look at the film as a memorial of my brother," said Bonnie Levar, whose brother Donald Greene was on the flight. Andrew Bernstein, whose uncle died on flight 93, said, "Some people say, 'How can you do this? It's too soon.' And we say 'It's not soon enough.' " Some offered a more qualified endorsement.

"I would have preferred everything about this be a documentary," said Sarah Wainio, whose sister Elizabeth was a passenger on the flight. "But for a Hollywood feature I thought they did a good job."

United 93 comes to theatres on April 28th.
