Universal Pictures is calling all mobsters with their recent acquisition of We Own the Night.
Universal Gets Wahlberg, Phoenix and We Own the Night
According to Variety, Universal has picked up domestic distribution rights on We Own the Night, a mobster film starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg.
The film, directed and penned by James Gray, is set in 1980s Gotham, where cops are fighting the Russian mob after it has targeted officers and their families.
Phoenix and Wahlberg play brothers from a family with deep roots in the NYPD who have chosen different sides in the war: Wahlberg plays a cop, Phoenix a manager at a gangster-owned nightclub.
We Own the Night is a reunion of sorts for Wahlberg, Phoenix and Gray, who previously worked together on The Yards.
We Own the Night is filming as we speak in Gotham.
After production closes out, there is a strong chance that Joaquin Phoenix will move on to Without Remorse; a project that is currently rumored for the actor.
It turns out that I am more thrilled on Mark Wahlberg being a producer than an actor. HBO is setting up for the return of Wahlberg's Entourage this June.
