Fantastic Four
What can we say, Fox continues to be afraid of competition for their Fantastic Four franchise. The first film was scheduled for a July 4th release -- a fitting date to be sure -- but immediately pushed the film back to July 8th in order to avoid any ripples left by Paramount's War of the Worlds.
Back in December Fox announced that they were going to give the 4th of July another shot with the sequel to Fantastic Four and, again, I admit that the date is extremely fitting for this time of film. But then again, what is Fox supposed to do when they hear that Michael Bay's Transformers: Movie is also has a theatrical release planned for the 4th?
Change the date of course!
Fantastic Four Sequel Shifts Dates
That's right, 20th Century Fox again had to shift the release date for the next installment in the Fantastic Four franchise due to some scary competition. Fortunately for fans of the superheroes, Fox decided to push the date forward instead of back this time.
Thanks to the picture house's move to pull the plug on the Stiller/Carrey comedy Used Guys, the weekend of June 15th became a perfect slot for Fox to slide Fantastic Four 2 into.
Since the original Fantastic Four was just OK -- and definitely not up to the standards laid down by either Spider-Man or X2 -- fans have been hoping that the franchise pulls an X-Men and creates a much, much better sequel. I can't say Fox's fear of a little competition instills confidence though.
