With it’s snowy, European locations shot in cinemascope widescreen, Last Holiday proved a respectable demonstration DVD for the JVC 52” HDTV. The Toshiba progressive scan player reproduced the film through the HDMI cable with the following results:

Last Holiday in HD

All the exterior scenes let the bright white snow fill the screen. Any color set against it, be they people’s parkas or props, provided effective contrast. All the exotic culinary dishes look painfully clear, making it hard to just eat a pizza while the gourmet buffet is laid before the audience.

The odd parts of the film were the interior scenes, which all had a weird golden glow to them. The effect is that everyone’s skin tone looks the same, from the black divas to the pasty redheads.

Perhaps that was the intention of this makeover fantasy, and it hardly distracts from the comedy. Since I did not see the film in theaters, I cannot even say if the lighting scheme was not originally intended to create such an effect. Nevertheless, Last Holiday makes another case that normal DVDs look just fine on HDTVs with the right equipment.

Stay tuned for updates.
