The Break-Up Vince Vaughn in The Break-Up
Vince Vaughn likes to do things his way, so when he developed The Break-Up with his writing partners, he set the film in his home town of Chicago. This gives the film a different feel from most Hollywood movies that are shot and/or set in either New York or Los Angeles.

Vaughn and Aniston on Breaking Up in Chicago

“I really love Chicago,” Vaughn said. “I mean the people there are just great and I think just being from the Midwest, I have family from Ohio and lots of places, but I was raised outside the city. Chicago really takes advantage of the summer, because they don't get good weather all the time, so there's a lot of great outdoor festivals and stuff that they have and great restaurants and food and there's great museums, there's great theaters and plays and stuff in Chicago. It's just a great city.”

The city won over Vaughn’s costar, Jennifer Aniston, who spent her first two months ever in the city while filming The Break-Up. “Chicago is my kind of town,” she said. “It really was. I just had a ball there. There’s just something about the people, they’re kind, they are respectful… It’s a feeling. It’s an energy. When you walk through the streets of Chicago you just feel great. And as far as the food, the architecture, the theater, the museums, you just have so much so, yeah, I absolutely love it.”

Designing The Break-Up as a kind of love letter to Chicago came out of Vaughn’s cinematic education. “For me going up, I was a fan of all the John Hughes films and, of course, The Blues Brothers and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “When me and Jon did Made together and I had gone back to New York, where he was from originally, I kind of got it in my mind, 'I'd like to do something and bring it back to Chicago.' So this seemed like the right kind of movie, because the city's sort of a backdrop lead in the movie and it just kind of made sense, it's kind of the Heartland, and it's a big city but it still has some smaller town sensibility and it just seemed like a good combination of accessibility for most folks.”

Chicago also provided more unique entertainment off set for the visiting celebrities. “We just went to the Cubs games a lot,” Vaughn said. “We went to the Taste of Chicago. We went and saw Second City when I was there. We went to some of those museum exhibits. We saw Sue that big dinosaur, which was cool.”

And the citizens left the stars alone. Even shooting a scene at Wrigley Field, Aniston felt a reprieve from the usual onslaught of gawkers. “I tell you there is a level of respect there that you get,” Aniston said. “We did not get bothered.”

The Break-Up opens on June 2nd.
