Full Metal Jacket
After the glorious demonstration of Blazing Saddles in HD DVD, I was psyched to pop in Full Metal Jacket. Made more recently in the ‘80s, the format could surely offer an even greater restoration job on this classic, right?
Full Metal Jacket HD-DVD Review
Well, Full Metal Jacket was not exactly a colorful movie. The basic training scenes are deliberately muddy. The Vietnam scenes offer a tad more range, particularly in the village or in any flaming war zones. But it makes you appreciate how deglamorized this movie is when you display it in the optimal visual format.
The film itself is totally clean. It’s a tad grainier than the other HD DVDs I’ve tested. Films like The Last Samurai show none. The image is not 100% sharp. I don’t know if that’s Kubrick using soft focus, but I doubt it. Maybe the original film could not be restored any further but the HD DVD of Full Metal Jacket gives you a hint of your average normal looking movie as opposed to the attention-getting demo discs you may see in Best Buy.
Stay tuned for updates.
