Da Vinci will lose to the X-Men since tired from opening weekend.
Since the summer blockbuster season is going to put some of the biggest tentpole films we have ever seen (budget wise) head to head, we figured we'd start off the box office brawl with a bout between The Da Vinci Code and X-Men: The Last Stand.
The Da Vinci Code vs X-Men: The Last Stand
“In this corner we have The Da Vinci Code weighing in at $125 million (budget) and a corner that includes Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen, Audrey Tautou, Paul Bettany, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and, the biggest factor of all, Jesus. Da Vinci Code laid a pounding on its competitors last week with a total box office take that shot north of $200 million. The fans rejoiced... and prayed for Jesus.”
“In this corner we have the new contender, X-Men: The Last Stand, weighing in at somewhere close to $200 million and a corner that includes Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Vinnie Jones, Kelsey Grammer, Halle Berry, Ellen Page and helmer Brett Ratner. Though the X-Men are new to the ring they have a long history of destroying competition.”
The Da Vinci Code
Strengths: Word of Mouth, Best-Selling Book, Topic of Religion
Weaknesses: Tired by its Second Weekend, Negative Reviews
Predicted BO Take: $42M
X-Men: The Last Stand
Strengths: Opening Weekend, X2 Considered Best Comicbook Movie by Many, Blockbuster Budget
Weaknesses: No Bryan Singer, Rushed Production, Mixed Reviews
Predicted BO Take: $82M
Though The Da Vinci Code will continue to find strength in religion and Dan Brown supporters, the fact that this is X-Men 3's opening weekend will help 20th Century Fox land the KO uppercut against Sony. Both films haven't had the best reviews, but Da Vinci should get a slight edge with better word of mouth. Though this is great for Sony, X-Men: The Last Stand will jab back by fitting perfectly into the summer blockbuster mold; tons of action and special effects.
By the end of the bout this weekend X-Men: The Last Stand will stand the victor. The Da Vinci Code, however, will be able to hold its own until the final KO punch in round #8 (of 13).
*Box office predictions for domestic three-day weekend.
