Modernizing Superman

Superman Returns- Bryan Singer Bryan Singer on the set of Superman Returns.
As much respect as he paid to the original Superman films, Bryan Singer did update Superman Returns for the new millennium. Issues of the legal system come into play, working moms too and a little bit of the cynicism of our values. As Perry White, Frank Langella comments about “truth, justice and all that…”

“They did it so well with justifying the line ‘truth, justice and the American way’ in the original Superman,” Singer said. “She says ‘You’re going to end up fighting every politician in Washington.’ He says, ‘You don’t really mean that Lois.’ She says, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ He says, ‘Lois I never lie.’ And that’s such a great scene because they took that expression which I don’t shy away from and they commented on it they way Americans are very passionate, very patriotic and self depreciating at the same time.”

Of course, in the year 2006, Singer couldn’t be quite that overtly idealistic. “Americans are the first people to be weirdly simultaneously patriotic and self- criticizing. It’s one of our rights as Americans. We can do that. With that notion, I didn’t have a better way to take the edge off it so I did it that way. But, he is an American superhero. There’s no denying that. He’s the ultimate immigrant, raised on a farm in Kansas. He represents what we as Americans idealistic what to be. In that way I shy away from it, but I don’t know how to. But he’s not just fighting for America. He’s fighting for the world. He always was. So it’s not shying away from it, it’s just treating it in not a better way, but a different way. I couldn’t measure up to how they treated it.”

Updating the Superman mythology with developments like Lois’s new marriage also raises questions about canon. “I don’t know the effect it would have on the comic franchise. I hope it has some effect because I think it’s interesting. It was the biggest challenge for me and yet for me it was very necessary because I wanted to create an obstacle that was so great that even Superman couldn’t penetrate it or avoid it. It’s not simply that Lois Lane’s moved on. It’s not simply she’s moved on with a guy who is not a bad guy. He’s a good guy. But that [SPOILER OMITTED] is exciting to me and interesting and it creates a deeper notion. It creates a depth to his relationship with Lois Lane that had not existed before. I think it was necessary. I don’t know how it will affect the comic book and DC.”

Superman Returns opens to theatres on June 28th.
