New Line Cinema continues to fill the cast for their upcoming adaptation of Hairspray with Zac Efron as the latest addition.
Zac Efron for Hairspray
According to Variety, New Line Cinema has picked up Zac Efron to play the role of Link in Hairspray.
Efron, who has found success on Disney's High School Musical, will need to take a different approach to fulfill the demands of his new character.
Director Adam Shankman said he needed to be sure Efron could get away from his 'wholesome' nature in the Disney pic.
"I was a bit dismissive, because that film is pure Disney, and I told him I needed a more subversive energy," Shankman said. "He worked on it and he gave it to me."
Efron finally landed the role after trying out for several other studio films.
"I've gotten as far as the fifth or sixth callback on movies, but it is more than I could imagine to get the role in a film like this," Efron said.
Efron joins Nicole Blonsky, who won the role of Tracy Turnblad after a nationwide search.
