Though Warner Bros' Superman Returns did not match up to Paramount's Fourth of July opener of War of the Worlds last year, it was still enough to top Batman Begins.
Superman Returns Weekend Box Office
According to Variety, Superman Returns was able to pull in $84.2 million over the five-day weekend. This number is just shy of what I was hoping to win ($98M) in this week's California State Lottery.
After having a strong opening on Wednesday (and Tuesday), Superman Returns box office numbers began to fall faster than the superhero struck down by kryptonite to a total take of $52.1 million over the three-day. A strong showing sure, but nothing spectacular.
Warner Bros can't complain, however, considering the film represents a slight improvement over Batman Begins' $72.9 million during the same period. With the weekend over the studio will now begin to count the numbers as they slowly reach the $200 million budget given to the film; also add in another $40 million spent previously by Warner Bros.
With an international box office that has once again proven to have some influence in 2006 -- giving Superman Returns an additional ~$20 million -- expect the superhero to get near the mark before the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest on Friday.
If not, well, Warner Bros may begin counting the change.
On an added note, a big surprise this weekend comes from The Devil Wears Prada's $27 million box office take.
Superman Returns is out in theatres now.
