Over the past few months we have heard so many box office predictions for Superman Returns that there were bound to be a few exaggerations. Though there were quite a few who figured that the recent Bryan Singer installment would approach the $200M mark by the end of the day, the lows on the scale were somewhere around $100 million; pretty close to where the film finally landed after the seven-day.
Superman Returns Seven-Day Box Office
According to Variety, Superman Returns pulled in $106 million over its seven-day opening weekend; the same exact number as today's California Lottery winnings.
The film was able to pull in $52.5 million over the three-day weekend and, with the help of an early Wednesday opening and the Fourth of July holiday, was able to rake in another $54 million more. Based on the weekend alone, Superman Returns was on the low end of recent non-sequel superhero films. Though the film had a larger take than Warner Bros' own Batman Begins it still fell short of Spider-Man, X-Men and even Fantastic Four; ouch!
Fortunately for Warner Bros, the prime opening date, which essentially created a seven-day weekend, worked in the studio's favor. The $106 million take for Superman Returns bests all those films except Spider-Man at the end of their first week.
With the numbers falling off pretty quick, Warner Bros must now hope they bring in a similar domestic take to Batman Begins, which finished in the low $200s. Considering that Warner Bros blew ~$220 million on the film, which they are also seeing as an investment in rebooting the franchise, the studio is now hoping for the overseas market to give them that extra kick to get ahead of the break-even line.
