You, Me and Dupree Poster
With the release of the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree coming our way this Friday I figured it was time for some early reviews.

So far there have only been two early reviews and they can't seem to agree with one another. Though Variety admits that the film makes you chuckle more than laugh, they appreciated the finer, more drama based aspects to the film. THR, on the other hand, wasn't that impressed.

So Universal can look forward to an above-average opening, attracting largely female audiences. But the movie loses focus about halfway through, so boxoffice will probably level off around the $50 million range.
Some of the comedy just doesn't play. Carl can't possibly think Dupree, who is nothing if not loyal, is hitting on his wife. After all, Carl was the one who came home late, leaving Dupree and Molly to share an intimate dinner for two. And would Carl really keep his old porn collection lying around the house? And if he would, what does that say about him?
Variety
Three's a pleasant enough crowd in "You, Me and Dupree," a middling third-wheel comedy elevated a couple of notches by the ineffably weird charms of Owen Wilson. Proceeding from a conventional easy-laugh premise -- a pair of newlyweds forced to put up with an obnoxious houseguest -- pic sidesteps the potential gross-out monotony of its setup by heading in an unexpected and dramatically effective direction, though rarely eliciting more than a chuckle along the way. Still, the strong cast and genial execution should have broad demographic appeal, making this a welcome (and financially self-supporting) lodger in Universal's summer house.
It looks like we may have to keep waiting before a comedy matches the strength of Wedding Crashers. Check out both reviews for You, Me and Dupree by clicking the bold links above.
You, Me and Dupree comes to theatres on July 14th, 2006.
