Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Takes Monday Record
According to Variety, Disney's Pirates sequel will not be slowed by the non-holiday weekday.
Dead Man's Chest grossed $18.1 million Monday, shattering the previous non-holiday Monday benchmark of $14.4 million set by Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith last year. A pirate takes down a jedi? I don't believe it!
The decline in box office receipts from Sunday to Monday was less than 50% -- more in line with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which ultimately made more than six times its opening gross. Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand declined 57% and 64%, respectively, the day after their opening weekends.
With Monday down, Pirates is now looking to break another record -- largest single-week gross. The record is currently held by Spider-Man 2 at $192.1 million. If the numbers continue as they are for Dead Man's Chest, the film has a great shot of breaking this number.
What is left for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to do? Well, there is another ship, Titanic, that the Flying Dutchman is hoping to catch up to. James Cameron's big-budget love story has a total domestic take of $600 million. Pirates looks like it will be close but short with somewhere near $520 million.
