Get a head start on Beowulf by purchasing the book from Amazon.
With the success of films such as Lord of the
Rings, and the hype around The
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,
it seems that adapting really old books to film is the ultimate way to go.
Well, Sony is taking this advice and going way back in time, by adapting
a book that was penned sometime around [or before] 10th Century AD. Can
you take a guess what it is? Well, only one of the oldes surviving pieces
of anglo-saxon literature of course.
Beowulf Gets Funding and Zemeckis
According to Variety, Sony has been found willing to shell out another two
million dollars to get a screenplay finalized for the Beowulf movie
adaptation. Richard Avary and Neil Gaiman are currently working on the Beowulf
script, with Robert Zemeckis on hold to direct. While Robert Zemeckis is
known for his stranger-than-fiction epics [Forrest Gump, Cast
Away], I do believe he could handle a film such as this mythological
epic.
To be honest, I can't remember Beowulf all too much. This was the
story you were forced to read as the first book in your literature or mythology
classes. I was always anxious to get by this story and move onto the Iliad
or the Aeneid. I am not saying Beowulf is a bad story,
just a little too much 'poetry' for my tastes. However, I'm sure the film
will be able to choose only the best aspects for the epic and leave most
of the unnecessary poetry to the book.
Beowulf is the story of a Scandinavian warrior, in the sixth century,
who takes on a monster called Grendel.
