Spider-Man 3
Don’t worry, they haven’t brought in
Jake Gyllenhaal. Tobey Maguire still plays the webslinger, but Spider-Man
3 promises a somewhat different Peter Parker. Before showing
footage of next summer’s tentpole film at Comic-Con, Tobey Maguire
talked to press about the capper to the trilogy.

For starters, as the teaser poster already revealed,
we know Spidey wears the dark suit this time. That’s not that different
for Maguire. “[It’s] pretty much the same,” he said. “I
mean, what it feels like, the material’s similar. I think it’s
probably a little sleeker and sexier, you know, kind of more like me in
real life.”
The costume, teaser footage and the fact that at least three villains are
trying to kill him seem to indicate a nastier, more visceral Spidey. Maguire
was vague about his new personality. “It was just because we’ve
gone into some different areas that it was new and fun for me without losing
touch with who Peter is. So I really enjoyed the things that I got to do
in the movie.”
Anyone who’s read some of the classic Spider-Man
comics knows how dark he could be, but Maguire keeps the movies separate.
“I haven’t thought about it like that. I didn’t really
read those comics. I mean I read a few years of them from the ‘60’s
and I didn’t really read them quite like that.”
For Maguire, the focus was to keep Peter Parker consistent with the previous
two films. “There’s obviously a continuity of character that
you have to keep up. Peter Parker is Peter Parker and so it’s important
to not just try to like create new kind of things for Peter just for the
sake of that. I don’t necessarily want to see the same scenes played
out and Peter going through the same kind of things that he’s gone
through, so I think that Alvin [Sargeant] and the other people who had input
into Peter’s story and what Peter’s going through in this movie
did a fantastic job. As an actor, for me there was nothing stale about it.
I got to approach it and got to do like brand new, really fun, interesting
things for myself. And in terms of what the specifics of that are, you know,
you’ll see when you check out the movie.”
