Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman has been trying to change her image. Known lately for 'cutesy' films, the actress has been working to pick up films in other, less cute, genres. Earlier this year she agreed to hop onto a spy-thriller and now has followed a compass straight into the fantasy genre.
Kidman for The Golden Compass
According to Variety, New Line has picked up Nicole Kidman to play Mrs. Coulter in the upcoming adaptation The Golden Compass.
Compass is the first book Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The production has been given a budget near $150 million.
Chris Weitz is directing from his own script. Brit newcomer Dakota Blue Richards has already been cast for the lead role of Lyra Belacqua, who travels to a parallel universe to battle the forces of evil and rescue her best friend.
Kidman's Blossom Films signed a three-year, first-look feature film production deal earlier this year with 20th Century Fox and Fox 2000. Upcoming films include an untitled pic with Jennifer Jason Leigh for director Noah Baumbach; Fur, a biopic of photographer Diane Arbus; Warner Bros. horror pic The Visiting; and Warner animation Happy Feet.
New Line is hoping to have The Golden Compass ready for release on November 16th, 2007.
