Good Night and Good Luck
HDTV has proven its ability to show amazing ranges in color, but there hasn’t really been an example of great HD black and white yet. There was the opening scene in Van Helsing’s HD-DVD, but that was a fake homage. A real black and white movie like Good Night and Good Luck is the real test.
Good Night and Good Luck DVD Review
Unfortunately, it come through rather grainy. You’re not going to see the sharp lines delineating shadow and light that you might expect. The greasy old hairdos will shine and the tweed threads will look distinct in close-up, but the only time you get a really strong black is when the shadow fills half of the screen. Otherwise it’s all grey.
Now you know that a JVC 56” Projection set can show what’s there. The problem may be that Warner Brothers is pushing the HD-DVD version of this film, so maybe the normal DVD transfer isn’t up to snuff.
On the plus side, everyone’s deep voice rumbles out of the speaker.
Stay tuned for updates.
