Taps Special Edition
With the 25th Anniversary re-issue of Taps,
there are more important things than retrospective features and commentary.
For one, when was Timothy Hutton ever this young? I only remember him as
middle age generic bad guy.
Taps Special Edition DVD Review
Also, how does a 25-year-old movie hold up to modern technology? Making
the HDMI conversion to my 56” JVC projection set, Taps
has a multitude of colors on display. Medals and ribbons on uniforms and
flags of various symbols shine brightly.
The rest of the film shows age. Film stock can’t help showing grain,
both real and digitally approximated. Faces are fuzzy as the machine just
tries to make do, flashing in and out of pore and stubble detail. But reds,
greens and golden yellows distract from that.
It gets better once the adults leave the picture. No more lines and stubble
to try to amp up, just fresh faced kids. The final sequence is scratched
up good, but perhaps that adds a little authenticity to the old flick.
Stay tuned for updates.
