Just great, it turns out that football films are
becoming just as popular as comicbook movies. Though we would have expected
some pop actors to be included with any new underdog football team, this
time it will be George Clooney -- wha? -- stepping in front and behind the
camera.
George Clooney for Leatherheads
According to Variety,
Universal Pictures has picked up George Clooney to direct and star in the
upcoming football drama Leatherheads.
Clooney is also rewriting the script with production set for early spring.
The film has had several incarnations over the past decade, including as
a drama with screenwriter Jon Favreau and director Jonathan Mostow. The
original premise revolved around an aging football player who coaxes a college
star to drop out and try his luck in a new professional league. Clooney
was once close to starring in it for former Section Eight partner Steven
Soderbergh; they expected to make it their follow-up to Universal's Out
of Sight.
Renee Zellweger is also in negotiations to co-star
with Clooney in what Universal is calling a romantic comedy.
