Windy City Heat
Windy City Heat is a great concept. It may feel like you’re not quite in on the joke at first, but it grows on you. The friends of aspiring actor Perry Caravello pretend to cast him in a big action star role just to mess with him. At first it seems like you’d have to know Perry for years to appreciate all the buttons they push, but by the halfway point, you can appreciate what it must be like to live with this guy.
Windy City Heat DVD Review
They come up with very funny things to hinder Perry’s rising star, and they’re so obvious you know he must be an idiot to fall for it. Characters named after historical figures and events are such obvious ringers, but he never questions it. They make him do gross things and take ridiculous situations seriously just to watch him react.
At first, only the filmmakers who know Perry will be rolling on the floor. To us, he’s just a gullible victim. But it’s worth waiting for because once he starts screeching in exacerbated frustration, you’re watching the ultimate Punk.
The actual payoff is amongst the DVD extra features. When he finally finds out what the finished film is, he takes it pretty well. You can sense an underlying sadness, and at a certain point you wonder if he really does understand the whole concept. Once he’s on to doing audio commentary, he’s sort of playing that he knew the whole time, but discusses scenes as if they were actual events, even though he now knows it was all set up.
It’s all worth a watch. In an age where “reality” comedy is coming to the forefront with Jackass and Borat, Windy City Heat is a worthy brother in the genre.
Stay tuned for updates.
