Fearless
Anyone who has followed Jet Li knows he’s about more than kicking ass. He has always tried to put some philosophy in his films, and whatever didn’t fit has gone on his website. Now he finally managed to get all his philosophy in a single film, the martial arts epic Fearless. The story of Huo Yuanjian, a cocky young martial arts star who hits bottom and rises up with a new respect for the art of martial arts, related closely to Li’s own journey.
Jet Li Talks Fearless Philosophy
“This master died at 42 years old,” Li said. “He learned martial arts through his life journey and I made the film when I was 42. This is my life journey. I just made the two become one. Like the first 30 minute is probably my personal feeling. I got five year champion and famous, then suddenly I make a movie and become a well known actor in Asia. Then you have a lot of people around you, you feel very good and then you become selfish, aggressive, you don’t want to listen to mom, friends, costars. You don’t want to listen. You think I’m the one, I can make everything happen. If you're successful at a very early age, you have that feeling and you make a lot of mistakes at that point. Even not just me, I see a lot of actors in Asia, they go through the same journey.”
Luckily, Li didn’t have to kill an opponent in battle to change his ways. He just took in Wushu philosophy. And if some of his fans just enjoyed the kicking, he’s not upset. “It’s not their fault. It’s in the past, we only give that kind of message, who’s physically strong, who’s technique has skills, who’s the tough guy, who beats up the bad guys. Tell the students, tell them revenge in the future so the son grew up learning techniques, skills to beat up the bad guys. So that’s the only message we give in the past movies, a lot of action films. So I didn’t say it’s wrong. I just said not good enough because it’s a part of martial arts. I want to share more different angles, different levels.”
Fearless is still full of epic battles that Li’s fans love, so even if they only come to see him fight some more, Li knows he’s put his best beliefs out there. “I have hope really. You never want to be teaching someone. I only can share what I believe. Because the audience I face to is all over the world, different age, different education, different religion, different things. No matter how hard I try to them, the answer still is different. Somebody just say, ‘Oh, it’s a cool movie.’ Somebody say, ‘No, still beat up somebody.’ Even the reporters I see today say, ‘Oh, beat hard that guy.’ So you cannot change people’s mind. I only share what I believe. But without that, nothing. Even if somebody gets the idea, I’m happy. If not, so even if I’m God, I cannot change people’s life. I did my best. Just do your best. It’s good enough. That’s what I believe.”
Fearless opens to theatres this Friday, September 22nd.
