After jumping aboard the Focus Features comedy, A Little Game, in early September, Carrey and Diaz have already made a swift exit; and they have taken the director with them.
Cameron Diaz, Jim Carrey Leave A Little Game
According to Variety, Focus Features' romantic comedy A Little Game crashed and burned when Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz and director Gabriele Muccino all left the production only weeks before its start date.
Focus is now hoping that James Shamus can keep the project alive. Schamus, an accomplished writer, will be involved in an emergency attempt to rewrite the film's script and set up a new director. If these changes are up to Jim Carrey's approval, Focus may be able to salvage his participation.
Based off of the French play by Jean Dell, A Little Game was supposed to feature Carrey and Diaz as an engaged Manhattan couple who devise an experiment to see how their friends feel about the relationship. They discover their friends believe them to be a poor match, and there are consequences.
Carrey and Diaz both boarded the projected under the agreement of a rewrite the would solve problems that each thesp had with the third act. Muccino was put to the task of handling the changes with the guidance of Shamus. The resulting draft, however, took the comedy in a direction that prompted the actors to bail.
"Cameron is no longer part of the project, but we're still hoping to make this movie with Jim," she said. "Right now, we are regrouping but still planning to move forward with the movie. We'll play with the dates, but the intent is to shoot it before Christmas."
It will still be a miracle if Focus was to get Carrey back on set, considering that he and Diaz joined the cast in order to work together again. No Diaz likely means no Carrey.
A Little Game marks the third straight Carrey comedy that has failed to enter production.
