Back in January we talked about the rumor
that said that Disney was going to go ahead with a Toy Story 3
movie, even without Pixar involvement. Guess what, it wasn't a rumor. Disney
plans to make the film from a new animation unit they are designing to replace
the already gone, though thought would come back, Pixar.
Toy Story 3 is a Go
On February 1st, Chairman Dick Cook told reuters
that Toy Story 3 will be a full feature film set for theatrical
release some time during 2008. This is a major relief to some, as it means
that Disney will not be following their usual plan to have crappy sequels
released straight to video. Anyone remember Lion King 2½ or the second
Beauty and the Beast? I don't thinks so. Well, considering that CGI animation
is much more expensive to do, Disney may soon go completely away from this
trend.
When the news of Disney going forward with Toy Story 3 without
Pixar broke, most viewers looked on with shock. Disney, on the other hand,
was prepared for the loss of Pixar and had stated in their contract that
Disney was allowed to create sequels for Pixar's animation hits with or
without actual Pixar involvement. Damn you Michael Eisner!
Disney plans to build the new animation unit in Glendale, California. What
is their first plan of attack? Well, lets just say Toy Story
3 will not be the only sequel to a Pixar film without Pixar involvement.
