The Hobbit
When MGM announced their tentpole lineup early September they disrupted a bee's nest when they included The Hobbit on their to-do list. What? Did Peter Jackson have any idea this announcement was coming?
Jackson responded to the announcement by claiming that, though he is excited about the prospects of a big-budget adaptation, MGM had never contacted him nor did he think he had time for the project. Remember, Jackson is soon going to have Microsoft, Fox and Universal breathing down his back for the upcoming Halo adaptation.
MGM Responds to The Hobbit Petition
In response to MGM's announcement, 39,116 people signed a "The Hobbit Petition" to MGM and New Line late September. New Line has yet to respond, but MGM was gracious enough to send theonering an open letter.
"Peter Jackson's phenomenal success with The Lord of the Rings trilogy makes him the first and most ideal choice for directing The Hobbit," said MGM. "MGM would be thrilled to collaborate with the Academy Award-winning director on this MGM New Line Cinema production. And, I'm sure to the delight of the 50,000 filmgoers who have petitioned us in recent weeks, demanding we bring this film to fruition, we have had a few initial conversations about the project with Mr. Jackson's representatives."
In talks with his representatives? This is The Hobbit, you better call the man direct! Jackson has suggested that, if he did do The Hobbit, he may split the story up into two films. He would then release each film on DVD in an extended edition that would cover the course of a day. OK, OK, he didn't say that last part; but he could be thinking it.
