Tim McGraw in Flicka
Tim McGraw has found success as a musician turned
actor, perhaps because he’s not making a big show of his acting. With
only three films to his credit, acting is still just something McGraw does
in between musical commitments.
Interview: Tim McGraw
“I'm not going to give up my day job, that's
for sure,” McGraw said. “But I like it. It's lot of fun. The
sitting around waiting is hard for me, because I can't sit still for very
long. But the art of it is just beautiful. It's just amazing art form.”
Having worked with three different directors, McGraw’s work remains
similar. “Everybody has a different style, but still in the end your
work has to be consistent. For me the hardest thing is I've been doing my
singing gig for so long, being that character on stage and being cool, is
to lose that and let go of Tim McGraw, which I think probably the hardest
part for any actor. Why is it called acting?”
In Flicka, McGraw
plays a rancher with a rebellious daughter. He wants her to learn responsibility
and focus on school, not this wild mustang she’s taken to. A real
life father, McGraw could relate.
“I think you have to be a little bit strict.
You can't be a friend and their parent in a lot of situations, especially
in this day and age where it's so dangerous for kids. So there's a bit of
sternness, I guess, in the way I raise my kids, but I've got girls. How
stern can you be? I'm not as tough as he is, but I don't have the life that
he had, just trying t run a ranch and be a dad at the same time. But certainly
the caring that this guy has for his family, which I think you can see throughout
the whole movie. He's really concerned with his daughter and family and
kids and how he's going to provide for them, but I think just the general
aspects of being a father is the biggest relationship I have with this guy.
And I try to balance being a father and doing everything else.”
One of his character’s issues is seeing his daughter as an equal,
which may be common in many traditional western cowboys’ families.
Not for McGraw though. “I grew up with my mom and two sisters. I have
a great resect for women. They're a lot smarter than we are to handle things.
I'd love to see a woman president. I think things would be handled with
a great deal of tact. And I have a great respect for my wife. She's the
glue in my family and the glue in everything we do. I'm kind of the wild
card and she kind of holds things together. So I'm sure there's still a
little bit of prejudice against women in some circles, but I can't see how
people can do that and not think they're getting the full end of good work,
and things get done well. In my experience, women are better at everything.”
