Bruno
With Borat ready to open to theatres it was only a matter of time before his other low-profile character, Bruno, was picked up by a studio. Though one would think that people would have learned their lesson after Borat and know to look for Sacha Baron Cohen or one of his characters, Universal is betting a good forty million that they, meaning you, haven't.
Universal Looking to Hire Bruno
According to Variety, Universal is close to signing a $42.5 million deal for worldwide distribution rights to Sacha Baron Cohen's next project, Bruno.
Bruno is another character from Da Ali G Show.
Bruno is an obviously gay Austrian TV reporter who, like Borat, is able to get into media hot spots including New York's Fashion Week. Bruno is notorious for saying inappropriate statements and getting others to say outrageous things on film as well.
Multiple studios have been bidding on the project with Borat due out this Friday.
Though there are many in the fashion industry who are now aware of Bruno, Cohen has managed to get the character to go beyond just fashion. One memorable stunt is when the character visited a few college boys on spring break. Besides having them teach him how to wrestle -- which looked so gay -- he got them to celebrate while showing off their normally-unexposed body parts. He finishes the segment with "Austrian Gay Television," something that doesn't receive the best reaction from the same college boys.
The deal with Universal would be a huge upgrade from the $18 million budget that Fox gave Borat. In the words of the Kazakh journalist, "Is Niiiiiice, Great Success!"
*Sacha Baron Cohen said he had a new character that nobody has seen yet. Could "Bruno" be a working title for this new character? Would serve as a nice cover.
