Somewhere Brandon Routh is wiping a bead of sweat off of his forehead -- his franchise career was close to over. Though before the release of Singer's Superman Returns, Routh was able to discuss multiple installments plus a possible Batman vs. Superman, getting a second go proved a little tougher than originally expected.
Things did look bleak, but Singer continued to promise that he was working to get Warner Bros convinced on a sequel. And so he has!
Superman Returns Sequel Confirmed
Only last week did studio insiders confirm that Warner Bros was finalizing the details to bring a Superman Returns sequel to the bigscreen. Now, just in time for Halloween, Warner Bros has confirmed that a sequel is most definitely a go. Superman will fly once more.
According to Variety, the ink is now drying on a new deal between Bryan Singer and Warner Bros. Pictures. Singer will return to direct and produce with Legendary Pictures expected to return to their role of co-financing the film.
Though still without a script or budget, the sequel is intended for a release in summer of 2009.
Before you get too excited, know that the project isn't exactly 'greenlit' just yet. The deal is at the very beginning of the development process and there are a number of factors that must be addressed -- including budget -- before going forward.
Warner Bros is still a little worried about an escalated budget, especially since Superman Returns did not bring in the ticket receipts that were hoped for; $400 million worldwide isn't too bad though. Both Warner Bros and Legendary supposedly recovered a profit from the film's theatrical release and is expected to really rake it in once the DVD hits store shelves.
Besides promising a sequel, Bryan Singer also promised that the second installment will have a ton more action for less money. Something nobody can really complain about.
