Halo Gets Postponed

I am not going to lie, we were counting on Warner Bros or Paramount to sack up and add Halo to the to-do list. Both are no strangers to big-budget franchises and Halo could have made a perfect fit at either studio. It looks like negotiations have fallen through for all likely options, so Wingnut has now made Halo's postponement official.

As was previously confirmed, we deeply regret that both Universal and Fox did not choose to move forward with financing the Halo film under the original terms of the agreement. At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen. We are fully supportive of Director Neill Blomkamp's vision of the film. Neill is a tremendously gifted filmmaker and his preliminary work on Halo is truly awe-inspiring. While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait.

The fact that the press release has to point out that Neill Blomkamp is still with the project must mean that at least some of the studios were afraid of having a director who would be making his feature debut; pussies. If you have seen some of his work you will understand why he became the man for the job.

I guess some good does come out of this. Microsoft, Bungie, Jackson and Wingnut have promised to deliver something great and in order to fulfill that goal they had to defer the project. Though die-hard fans usually regret rushed projects after they open to theatres, this is one of those few times where Hollywood delays a project in order to guarantee that it reaches the level of 'awe-inspiring.'

Major kudos to that.

Hopefully after the holiday one of the major studios will realize the opportunity they passed up, let their balls drop, and show Halo the green light once more. Paramount should do it and, if not them, Warner Bros should quickly get on the horn with Legendary. Afraid of the risk? Then split the bitch.

Stay tuned for updates.
