Deja Vu Deja Vu
Déjà Vu is not just a time travel movie. It’s a time travel surveillance movie. Government scientists discover a window into the past, so the FBI and ATF team up to solve a terrorist attack and murder by following the events leading up to it. As they watch the past on a video screen, the filmmakers actually had to film a second movie to play in the background.

Interview: Scott and Patton Talk Deja Vu Surveillance
“What was hard was that when we went into what I call the time lab or the main lab, when we run into the main lab, I had to construct that window so we shot what was 14 weeks,” said director Tony Scott. “We shut down for two weeks while I constructed, had all the actors sign off on the script because they have to perform like a third actor. That window’s like a third person in the room so I had to build that window and they had to stay true to their words and perform with this actor. That’s tough because people, depending on what side of the bed they get out of, whether they’re hung over, depending if they’re in a good mood or bad mood saying, ‘F*ck it, I want to change things.’ You couldn’t do it because it was locked down.”

As the murder victim central to the terrorist’s plot, Paula Patton starred in most of the past scenes, performing as if going through her daily routine, unaware of any cameras. “It is a bit of a challenge because you want to make it as honest and realistic as possible so you want to be the way you’d be at home on your underwear by yourself,” she said. “They don’t really want to see you picking your nose, but you want to be that comfortable you know. I think it’s a challenge as an actor to make sure that you don’t overdo it. That you’re as honest as possible to that moment and as unaware of the camera as possible. Tony is really great. He is always shooting with so many cameras. You never know really where they are. It allows you to feel as if you’re by yourself and that helps a lot instead of having a big camera in your face you know.”

Of course, the film goes for the shower joke. What lab technician wouldn’t use his past camera to observe everything? “That's when you just go, ‘I trust you, Tony. I trust you to do the right thing by me.’ And I really don't know how many cameras were going, because actually, when I saw the movie, I didn't remember there being a camera from up above. I was like, ‘Oh! I think he snuck that one in on me!’ We had talked about it. My idea of nudity, as of now, so don't hold me to this, this is how I feel at this moment, is that if it makes sense for the film and it's not in a sexual way... because I feel like you can do sex scenes that are really sexy without having to see nudity. But you're doing surveillance on a woman in the shower, and we're all going to know if we just do it from the top up. Then it takes away from the reality of it. And so I think he did it really tastefully, and for a very short period of time. And short enough that my parents won't want to kill themselves. I think. That it works for the movie, because you are being a voyeur in her world, and so it sort of happens that you see her like that. So I said, ‘Okay, Tony, I trust you!’”

Deja Vu opens to theatres on November 22nd.
