Tom Cruise
For those of you who thought Tom Cruise's takeover of United Artists was more symbolic than action, think again. Though the production company's wheels are still fighting off rust, Cruise has given UA its first light of hope; and it just so happens that this hope has been packaged with an impressive cast.
Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, Meryl Streep for Lions for Lambs
Though the title, Lions for Lambs, sounds right up the alley of Redford and Streep, it seems like a bit too drama for Cruise; perhaps he is taking a few risks to get his new love, UA, back up off the ground?
Written by Matthew Carnahan, Lions for Lambs takes the Babel approach by telling the story of three interconnected storylines: Cruise as a congressman who interacts with a journalist (Streep); Redford as an idealistic professor who attempts to inspire a privileged student in his class; and a third storyline about a pair of American soldiers wounded in enemy territory, one of whom is Redford's former student.
Robert Redford will play dual roles on the project, as he will also direct.
Even before Cruise and Wagner joined up with United Artists, Lions for Lambs was one of three films that Cruise was seriously considering. The other two, discussed in this article, were the adaptation of Dave King's novel, The Ha-Ha, at Warner Bros and the Spike Lee thriller Selling Time over at Fox.
Lions for Lambs became Cruise's number one choice, as it wasn't attached to any studio -- in slides United Artists.
United Artists will finance the film with hopes of entering production early next year.
Stay tuned for updates.
