Iron Man
When dealing with an actor who has a history of substance abuse, the best way to get info out of them is to hand out some of the craved substance and begin asking questions. Good for Robert Downey Jr but bad for our nosey selves, the actor has remained off the goods and is only willing to shed a few details on the pre-production for the upcoming Jon Favreau blockbuster Iron Man.
Robert Downey Jr. Talks Pre-Production on Iron Man
Access Hollywood recently caught up with Robert Downey Jr. and discussed what was going into pre-production for Iron Man, his excitement on the role, and the hero's origins.
"We're in pre-production and I'm stoked," Downey told Access Hollywood.
"Jon is gonna be a great director for it and we got a really great cast coming together," Downey said about Favreau and the expanding list of co-stars that includes fellow Academy Award Nominee Terrance Howard as Tony Stark's strategic confidante Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes. "It‘s just a blast," he added.
In the comic book storyline, Iron Man's alter ego has a darker side that deals with alcoholism. "If you look back through Marvel's history, he's probably the most ambiguous," he notes. Whether it's intentional or just coincidental, Downey's very public past problems with substance abuse will no doubt bring an underlying art imitates life nuance to the film. Though Downey is quick to point out, "That really doesn't come in until much later in the series. It's more that he's just conflicted about his past."
Though it would be interesting to watch how Downey handles the whole alcoholism plotline, Kevin Feige has already announced that this topic won't be approached until the next installment.
