Tenacious D's Revenge

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny is many things. It’s a love letter to the D’s fans, an introduction to the band for new listeners, the band’s feature film debut and most importantly, revenge against HBO for canceling the series.

Interview: Kyle Gass and Jack Black on Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

“I think it started happening pretty seriously after our HBO show and we were going to do a run at HBO,” said Kyle Gass. “They offered us ten episodes and wanted to fire us from being executive producers. We said, ‘F-you. We’ll go make a movie.’”

JB and KG refused to be tools of the corporate machine. Jack Black recalled, “They said, ‘Yeah, we want to do a lot with you without you having any creative control. We want you to be more like The Monkees.’ We’re like, ‘What? Why would we do that when the first ones were so good when with us f*ckin’ in charge? F*ck you. We’re beyond it. We’re gonna go make and movie, then we’ll show you.”

Gass added, “You know why? Because success is the only revenge.”

Then the band got preoccupied, said Black. “But then Kage was like, ‘Dude, f*ck the movie. The only thing that matters is the album.’ Remember? So then we made the album. Then, you changed your tune.”

When they came back to the possibility of a movie, the D decided to tell their origin story, to serve both sects of the audience. “The movie is like the origin episode of a comic book where you start before there was a Tenacious D,” said Black. “If we would have started in the middle of our existence then people would have had to do a lot of catching up.”

The title, though, screams to fans, “This is Tenacious D!” “I think we tilted it more for fans I think, hoping people got it,” said Gass.

The film features many musical performance, but it is not a musical per se. Only in the beginning do the characters sing the plot like a musical. “I got mad at Kyle in the last interview because he said we should have done the whole thing as an opera without any talking,” said Black. “I went, ‘What are you taking about? Stop saying bad things about the movie. We’re trying to promote the movie.’ Yes, we blew it. We should have done an opera. That song is not easy to write. To write a full opera you’ve got to take your hats off to The Who, but on the other hand that movie kind of sucked, and it’s probably because it was an opera from beginning to end, Kyle. You’ve got to stop and start talking at some point, you have to talk and communicate without singing. It’s annoying.”

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny opens to theatres on November 22nd.
