Eragon
Just before Thanksgiving we announced that Eragon
is featured in the latest, December issue of Sci
Fi Magazine. One of our readers, 'Rodman', has sent over a few snippets
from the report.
Eragon in Sci Fi Magazine
According to 'Rodman', the report on Eragon,
though a little behind on some bits of information, does feature some great
new details on the film, a fantastic opening spread, and interviews with
Speleers and Irons. Though the trailers have yet to show a single instance
of communication between Eragon and Saphira, the report confirms that the
two will speak telepathically. What we do see in the trailers is Eragon
speaking out loud to Saphira.
Irons sees his character as both a mentor and
a father figure to Eragon, who has never known his parents and was raised
by his uncle. Considering that Speleers is a teenage newcomer to the world
of moviemaking, are the parallels between Brom's fictional relationship
with Eragon and Irons' real-life relationship with Speleers?
"In some ways, yes," Irons says, "in that I am teaching him
something. This was his first time acting, and there was an element of the
father-son relationship. A lovely chap, he is." Irons admits that Speleers
reminds him of his younger son.
"That's a very good reason for possibly why
I was picked," Speleers says about his similarities to Eragon. "There are
many parallels. Obviously, it's a completely different time set in a completely
different world, but we're talking about a boy who comes from nothing, and
I myself -- although I would like to think I'm part of something within
my own environment--in terms of Hollywood, I'm nothing, I was nothing, I
still am nothing. But we've been through very similar journeys. Eragon lost
everything around him. I didn't lose everything, but I certainly for a few
months lost the close comforts that I had when I was living in England.
I think the whole process made me grow up, and the novel makes Eragon grow
up in many ways. He's the hero character. He does start off as a typical
teenager who's defiant. I think there's an element of that in me. I think
we both grew, Eragon and myself.
It turns out that the report does end on a bad
note. Though Fox claims that they have the next great fantasy coming our
way, they have yet to sign Speleers up for the second and third installment.
He's willing to do it for sure; they just haven't asked him yet.

Eragon comes to theatres on December 15th.
