Superman Returns comes to DVD on November 28 in a two disc release or as part of the 14 disc Ultimate Superman Collection. Among the special features are many deleted scenes, which the actors discussed at a red carpet party for the DVD.
Interviews at the Superman Returns DVD Party
Brandon Routh was most excited for a scene restoring his costars. "There's a scene with Ben Hubbard played by James Karen where I meet him at the family farm, the Kent Farm which is pretty funny which got axed from the movie but it was a really funny scene," said Routh.
Eva Marie Saint, who played Martha Kent, also missed her costar. "I don't know why they had to take it out, just too much sex I think," she joked. "He brings me flowers and he meets Clark for the first time and we're going off to play Bingo. We're playing Scrabble in the beginning. I love that part but it's showbiz. That was just in the beginning and I think our director decided that he didn't want the mother to be involved with anybody else. He wanted the son/mother relationship and it was stronger if there wasn't another person involved."
Sam Huntington's work as Jimmy Olsen remained pretty much intact. The DVD only includes an extension of a scene with Olsen in a bar. "I was lucky because I think most of my stuff, my scenes stayed in," he said. "Pieces of scenes were cut a la the one that's on the DVD. Pieces of scenes are cut up but the majority of stuff actually stayed in. I've been saying, it's probably just because I'm that good."
Stephen Bender, who plays teenage Clark Kent, also gets an extended scene showing more of his superpower discovery. He was just excited to be in the film. "Man, it was amazing," Bender said. "It really was. It was my first movie. Going to Australia to be in a movie, it was amazing. I just can't really say how much it meant to me to be even in this movie. Some parts were uncomfortable [with wirework] but it was just so much fun that I really didn't think about it or anything. The stunt guys were so nice and everything, so just being able to be on a big roller coaster was awesome every single day so it's kind of cool."
